BIM: efficiency in the design of facilities.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the collaborative work methodology for the creation and management of a construction project through a digital model. Its objective is to centralize all areas of the development of a construction project, including the installations, and taking advantage of the work carried out by all the agents involved.

Within the complexity of the development of a project, the electrical, plumbing and air conditioning installations acquire a higher degree of coordination that goes beyond the initial approach and design. This coordination is also required during the construction phase, where the cooperation of industrialists from the different disciplines is essential.
With this working method, it is possible to create a large database to manage the elements that form part of the infrastructure throughout its life cycle. This cycle can be divided into 7 dimensions that incorporate geometric (3D), time (4D), cost (5D), environmental (6D) and maintenance (7D) information.

A crucial advantage of the BIM system is the immediate updating of the planimetry shared with other users. Any changes can be captured immediately and be seen and considered by the different disciplines involved in a project.

The main benefits of this work methodology are:
1. Time reduction.
2. Transparency.
3. Quality and security.
4. Increased energy efficiency.
5. Cost reduction.

Since 2016, our I+D department has constantly invested in the development of a work environment based on BIM technology with the determination of the rules and requirements of each project.
We are specifically a good component library that describes our products, generated with Autodesk BIM REVIT software. This allows us to make a more precise, real and specific computer-assisted installation design.

It is currently mandatory in many countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. In Spain, following European directives, a precise reference is made in Law 9/2017 on Public Sector Contracts stating that "contracting authorities may require the use of electronic tools, such as digital building information modelling (BIM) tools or similar tools". As of the end of 2018, in order to give new impetus to the BIM implementation process in the country, the Council of Ministers approved through Royal Decree 1515/2018 the creation of the Interministerial Commission for the incorporation of BIM methodology in public procurement.
Furthermore, the digitization of construction is a key aspect in sustainable development and is included in the 2030 Agenda, specifically in goals 9 and 11 set by the UN.

This tool is a remarkable evolution of traditional design systems based on plans and represents an improvement in the representation of the constructive reality of building projects. BIM methodology is the present and future of public works contracting in Spain, Europe and much of the world.
